She's afraid of strangers;
She is terrified at the sight of our friendly newspaper delivery guy;
She hides at the first indication that a dump truck is near;
Fireworks ignite the fear in her....
Yup, that's my dog Taffy.
But I can't totally blame her for it, before she's been weaned, she's been moved from home to home with different people taking care of her. Until i took her home that is, poor thing must be traumatized and still has some bad memories of it, she's improved a lot though. Now at least she barks at strangers, albeit only behind the safety of a locked gate + grille door (give her a break, my mum used to say she's useless as a guard dog because she doesn't bark at all). Fireworks doesn't scare her as much nowadays, the newspaper guy and dump truck is another story... Yup, that's Taffy. And don't get me started on the way she sleeps...
"你睇吓佢，噉樣瞓哦。有贼进来都唔知啦!" my mom would say in cantonese, which means "look at the way she sleeps, she won't even notice if a burglar comes in!"

Just got stung at the back of my neck by a freakin' bee...i wonder how it got in too my shirt. Few months back there was a bee hive right in front of my house, a couple of people got stung, but no big deal. Fearing it would harm my puppy-to-be (well it wasn't officially mine that time), i got the Fire dept to remove it.

Well seems like the troops left a couple of troopers behind enemy lines waiting to pounce on a kamikaze mission. They decided that today was the day for them to drop the bomb, and i was the main target...

Though not as painful as others have described, this lil stinger can be (for my case, literally) a pain in the neck, an hour after the sting, and i still have this annoying burning sensation on my neck right now.

Well at least now I know that I won't die just because a couple of bees decided stick their sharp bottoms into me...

Ah....Inception?

I don't know... suddenly feel like writing something just to keep my blog alive (or is it too late??)

Went to watch Inception last night, was it good? Not bad I would say, but with all the hype going around, it made me expected more out of the movie. The whole concept is good but not new to me, because my mind likes to wander and come up with ideas like this... like what if...

What if the life we're living in is just a dream? That we may wake up someday realizing it's just another dream? Or worse still, forget everything tht has happen. Friends and family that I have and hold dear to my heart in this "dream" may end up being my annoying boss or the super competitive colleague who tries everything he/she can to step on you in order to climb up the pecking order. On the other (scarrier) hand, the one person you absolutely despise may be the person lying next to you when you open yor eyes in the morning.

Or what if... this one is more complex and harder to explain. Say, our soul has only a day's lifespan? Let's say our soul can only last for a day, an everytime we go to sleep it dies and a new soul replaces the old one but retains it's memory? Then what we perceive as a continuous life might just be a database of memory, it's like backing up all the data on a computer, reformat it, and then loading the same data back in over and over again...Does it look the same? Yes. Does feel the same? Yes. Does it respond to your command the same way? Yes.... to the users at least it is, but what will happen to the original data that's being deleted? The 'me' from yesterday? That means the 'me' right now won't even know that I'll be gone forever and be replaced when I go to sleep?

Ok, thinking too much, need to go read the bible and anchor myself before I drift into Neverland...

Hence gathering the mental and physical strength to do it will take a long long time, but i think i took a wee bit too long for the past few months to churn up something. So i promise, a promise to myself, to update by next week! Ok la, I give myself until the end of this month. CNY la, need a break. ;)

Nic is going to India for 3 months, hope he doesn't get lost or forget to come back. I need an experienced pianist in my team. BUt without him around maybe i can smuggle his imitation x2 Les Paul to my house.

I really couldn't believe when it first appeared on the screen... my post...on someone else's blog!! Ok, ok, rewind a bit. Well lately, i kind of felt like picking up where i stopped and start blogging again. And I noticed after a stopping for a couple of months, there are a few posts that still attracts visitors to my blog, especially the one about a guy being hit by golf ball (God knows why people actually search for stuffs like this) and the one about installing google pinyin. To massage my ego a bit, i went and googled "google pinyin installation" :p But know what? my post wasn't even on the first 3 pages of the search, instead I saw my materials on the first page...with someone else's blog title...Should I be happy because my stuffs are copy-worthy?

Adopt a rescued animal

Dropped by the SPCA a couple of weeks back, I was shocked to see how many (much) cats & dogs they are housing. I mean I know SPCA has always been short on financial support, but to shelter all these animals, it is ridiculous (well looking at how much money the government are willing to spend on white elephants and filling pockets instead of potholes). And pity those cute lil things, simple equation:

no money = no food + no space + no manpower = animals being put down if nobody adopts them

I came accross this blog, full of animals waiting to be adopted. They even provide food and cages if anyone could offer a temporary shelter for their animals.

Babysitting the Princess

On Sunday Kai Chi and I were handed the all important job of babysitting Princess Wei Yee, while her nanny Jo is away for a meeting...

So the whole afternoon went like this, drive > park the car > decide to drive back > park the car again > sit > stone > sit somemore > stone... in the end Princess Wei Yee decided to go swimming (because mamak aka fellowshipping is a waste of time according to her, and it makes her feel guilty), and we her humble servants have no choice but to obey :P

Well, the rain didn't deter them from jumping into the pool. In the end, princess got what she wished for and we all live happily ever after. Ok, in the very end we all went for mamak because princess wei yee was hungry, and left us just after 20 mins because her coach is turning back into a pumpkin, plus, her fierce father the king is waiting for her.

I'm Back!

Just got back from the Youth Camp @ Lutheran Centre PD yesterday, I'm exhausted. At first I thought it'll be easier on the leaders as we've got a new group of committees running the camp so we don't have to worry about anything. But still there's a lot of thing to be done during the camp, and not to mention the torture i put myself through with the games and sports. But all in all, the camp was good, seeing some of the young ones blossoming and maturing so much more than I expected. I believe God has spoken to many of us through Pastor Tryphena of PLUC. Kai Chi wrote a bit about one of the session on 5 love languages here.

I'm still tired now, can't really think straight, not very productive sitting in front of my laptop. Will update with photos soon. Zzz....should have taken another day's leave to recuperate.

I am sick... didn't know my body can feel so miserable, literally. May be caused by the back to back football and badminton games i had on Sunday and Monday, extra long hours on top of that. Didn't feel so well since last night, but today is like...argh!! I feel so old!!! :( Backache, bone ache, whole body aching and I think a flu or fever is on the way. God please, not now... please sustain my body.

Guess what :P After listening to David Archuleta's new album yesterday, I manage to get my hands on David Cook's album today.

Can't really compare the Davids' album coz both are different, but if I really have to pick one I'll have to go with...nah I still can't pick one. Archuleta's songs sound more or less the same, meaning if you like one, you'll like the rest. Not one song really stands out to me, well maybe except "You Can", I like the whole acoustic setup (acoustic guitar player ma....) and his voice shines through pure and soothing.

As for David Cook's album, I think "Mr. Sensitive" is good, the rest, it's still too soon to tell, have to let the songs sink in first ;P

Verdict: I think both Davids can do better, hopefully we'll see that in their next album. In the mean time, their debut will do.

David Archuleta

Finally got my hands on his album, just came out last week I think =)

I rooted for him during American Idol, and everyone believed he'd already won it even before the finale, he came so close to winning, too bad. Although David Cook is more versatile (speaking of which, his album just came out yesterday, publicity stunt?) I still think there's something about the young David that makes him stand out from the rest. I'm just half way through the album while typing this (I'm at track 5 now), he's delivered again =) Looking forward to more of David Archuleta. Will check out the other David's album soon.

I really don't feel like blogging, especially now, but I don't know what else to do. Picked up my laptop, switched it on, and subconsciously logged in to my blog. So many things happened for the past two months, and it's especially hard on my dad and my mom.

Will send my dad to my grandma's place tomorrow morning, my aunt and her family stays there, it's good in a way I guess. At least there are more people there to look after him, my mum and I can't be home all the time. I'm stuck, I don't know what else to say, really...

Non-Malay for PM?

Barack Obama has come against all odds to be elected as the next American president just yesterday. The whole world stood still watching, everyone was waiting for the saga to unfold. Not just because it's one of the world's strongest nation choosing their next leader, but because people are intrigued by the idea of an African-American President of the United States of America. I myself was for it, and I'm glad that it turned out this way. And accross the globe, newspaper headlines goes like this:

Change it is! The best thing about this is, surveys show that race wasn't the deciding factor of who the Americans vote for. In fact, Obama was one of the few candidates that gathered so many White American votes for a Democrat. Call the Americans racists all you want, but they sure know how not to let skin colour get in the way when making important decisions, putting the right people in the right position. But what caught my eye in today's frontpage was this, snugged at the top corner:

Dare we dream of that in Malaysia? Will it ever happen in our lifetime? Looking at the situation right now, where everyone is paranoid about loosing their rights and benefits when someone with a different skin colour steps into a position of power, I really doubt it. Just these few weeks we have the whole PKNS issue, what has race and gender got to do with running a State Development Corporation?

I believe when our forefathers first fought for the independence of this nation, they had dreamed of a multi-racial government. They would've dreamt of a Chinese or Indian being elected as the Prime Minister, one day in the future. After decades of pettiness and insecurity, and distrust, the dream, the hope would have diminished, slowly vanquished. We wouldn't know whether it will happen or not, but it's something worth pondering. Though a nice dream to have, but, dare we dream that anyone really can?

Just came back from the hospital, everything went well today :) The colostomy is done and we have the green light to start the radiotherapy early November.

Woke up really early today, got myself ready and went to the hospital with my mom. Arrived at Hospital Selayang five minutes before 9, coz my dad's operation was scheduled at 10 in the morning. After a veryveryveryveryveryveryveryveryveryveryveryloooooooongandboringstory which i decided to omit for your sake...the operation end up starting at 5:30pm. My gosh, i slapped myself on the forehead for deciding not to bring my laptop. And to make things worse, my phone ran out of juice because I used the GPS on my way to the hospital (just to test its accuracy, dumb move). Sat there throughout the whole day, and my only form of entertainment....the newspaper which i read, re-read, and re-read again, anymore i'll be scouring thru the classifieds. What's most important is eveything went smoothly, thank God. And thank you for all your prayers. So colostomy down, next in line will be radiotherapy. Keep praying.

Praying for my dad

Finally after 2-3 weeks of delay, the doctors are going to perform the colostomy on my dad at 10am Friday. We really wanted it to be done as soon as possible, because without it, my dad can't start the radio and chemoteraphy. I went and sign the consent today, because there's a risk of the blood not returning to the heart during the operation due to the growth in my dad's heart.

Just wanna ask all of you to pray for him, the Lord shall strengthen his heart and cause everything to run smoothly without any complications.

When typing slows down...

Lately the my Dell Vostro's keyboard response delayed after an update. It went to the point of being excruciatingly painful to even msn. Finally i got motivated enough to get off my lazy**rearendoftwoorfourleggedcreatures** to get it fixed. It took me ten minutes to go through all the processes and services running on my laptop to find the culprit -->PCMService.exe. It's a non-essential component that comes with most Dell machines that have Cyberlink software installed, for the remote control (my lappy doesn't even come with a freakin' remote). So i went ahead and remove it from the startup.

Start->Run->msconfig->Startup->Uncheck PCMService->Apply and Reboot.

Disabling this service will not affect any of the softwares and other services running on the computer. Go ahead, don't be a chicken...just do it.

Delay

Dad went to the hospital again today. Was suppose to meet with another doctor, the oncologist this time, then found out the meeting is on Friday, means the operation has to be rescheduled again. I really don't like all this delaying and it's making me a lil uneasy. Eph 6:18...Keep on praying, in the Spirit.

Just got my free Samsung Omnia

Yup, you read it correctly, i just got a free Samsung Omnia (SGH-i900), well, not just....Actually, I got it last week, but because of eveything that was going on (updates on my dad's condition), i really didn't feel like blogging about it.

It was my cousin sister who got the Omnia for her bf, but because he doesn't really know how to use it, so it ended up in my hands (i hear jeers of jealousy). It's a nice little phone actually, except for the fact that my cousin got a white one instead of black. Maybe the built-in GPS didn't turn out as good as i expected it to be, other than that, it's cool. Feature wise it's really packed full to the brim, the iPhone and HTC Diamond can't even come close. The only thing that the omnia falls short compared to the two competitors is the low-res display and some might say the looks. Who cares, i got it for free...and i'd never liked anything that has anything to do with Steve Jobs anyway, so, bite me.

And yeah, it doesn't have a slot for the stylus as well...needs a lil getting use-to with my not-so-small fingers.

Went to the hospital with my mum and dad to hear what the doc has to say. Was just a short meeting for such a long drive to selayang, it's actually what my dad had already told us. The problem with my dad's heart wasn't so simple, the cancer has spread there as well. The hospital needs to get our consent for an operation on my dad. The operation isn't even to remove the cancerous growth in my dad, it's just to open a stoma; but because of my dad's condition now, it's considered as high risk, 50/50 was what the doctor said.

So we'll most likely need to sign the consent on Thursday, and the operation will be scheduled on Friday. The doctor told my dad that he is still young, he must have the will to live, thank God for placing my dad under her care. My dad seems to be taking it very well, he doesn't seem worried at all and he is willing to take whatever treatment that will be coming his way. Pray that God will continue to sustain and give him strength to fight this battle.

Pray with me my friends, especially this Friday (tho it's not confirmed yet), that God will annoint the hands of the surgeons and nurses so that the operation will go well, and He will cause my dad's heart to be strong and function well. Amen.

Google Pinyin & Chinese Language Support Installation

Google Pinyin is a free Chinese Pinyin Input Method for typing and displaying chinese characters on Windows platform PCs, you can download the installer here. Why choose Google Pinyin? Besides it being free, it's better than some paid for software (read my previous post)

1) Before starting the installation, make sure East Asian Language Support is installed on your system.

You can do this by going to Start >> Control Panel >> Regional and Language Options.
For Vista users: Start >> Control Panel >> Clock, Language, and Region >> Regional and Language Options.
Click on the Languages tab, under Supplemental language support, make sure the option for Install files for East Asian languages is checked.

If not, check it, you should to have the Windows Operating System installation CD ready by now, when you click apply, it'll prompt you to insert the cd before proceeding with the installation.

2) By now, your system will be able to display chinese characters. If you do not wish to install Google Pinyin, stop here.

3) Run the Google Pinyin Installer.

4) After the installation, open the Regional and Language Options windows again and click Details. This window will appear:

5) Under the Installed services, click Add and the Add input language window will popup. Select these options:

6) After clicking ok, you're good to go. Just make sure the Chinese IME is selected (alt+shift) everytime you want to type in Chinese:

The heck with Chinese Star; we have Google Pinyin!

After years of troubleshooting and building computers for friends and clients, i'm tired of hearing the same old "Did you install Chinese Star for me?" stories. Few years back, the online chinese typing community had no choice but to pay few hundred ringgits for dreadful programs like Chinese Star or use Nanjixing with limited capabilities. Paying is one thing but the installation process is a nightmare, sometimes it's near impossible. But now, what i really don't understand is, why do people still want Chinese Star when we have the free Google Pinyin that can do everything Chinese Star can do? Sigh, blame it on human nature, fear of changes; even if it's for the better. We are one species on the planet that can never learn how not to be too overly sceptical of new things (Now's a good moment to pause, sigh , and pretend to ponder).

Some tech guys argue that chinese word processing is built in to Windows XP onwards, why waste time installing something else and take up more space? I didn't want to argue with someone who can't even read chinese let alone type it, if you've been through the excruciating experience of typing with Microsoft, you'll know what i mean. And it'll only take up 1MB of your precious cyber estate (post installation).

Years later, they got back together after the death of one of their band mate, trying to relive their dream (midlife crisis??); but things are much different now, one is jobles, one survives on 2 jobs another one is a car salesman, all 3 are hopeless. God vs Xango Juice

Got a call from my aunt today around 5pm, she told me her friend from the hospital (where my dad is currently seeking treatment) informed her that my dad needs to be admitted tomorrow instead of next Wednesday as planned. When I asked why, her reply was, “I’m not sure, must be something urgent la”. Well, what a way to end my day at work…

Just right after that, my dad called and told me the same thing, but he sounded upbeat, so I asked why...again (keeping my fingers crossed, hoping this time the answer would be different). And it turn out that a group of doctors is in Hospital Selayang doing a workshop on “Stem” (I don’t even know if it’s spelled this way) operations. And they said they could perform it on my dad, meaning my dad won’t have to open a stoma at his side and carry a pouch around if the operation is successful. I was relieved to hear that, although it doesn’t change the fact that my dad has cancer, but it’ll be more comfortable for him compared to having a stoma.

Seems like God is already working even before my dad starts his treatment. And later when I got home, my dad told me that his boss offered to cover all of the medical expenses, up to 50K. On the other hand, my aunt’s friend is helping us apply for some kind of welfare that’ll pay for all the expenses. So either way, we’re covered financially.

Then my dad said, if everything thing goes well, after his heart and kidney (stones) are fixed (yes, we’ve not touch on the cancer yet), he’ll drink 1 bottle of Xango juice everyday for one month then half a bottle a day for the next month to help clear the cancer cells while going trough treatment. As much as I want it to happen, I wished my dad would have said something like, God will heal him, instead of putting so much trust in a bottle of mangosteen juice =S . I’ve been forced to drink this since last year, but I can’t feel any difference in my body, not that I’m always sick…it’s just normal, like drinking a cup of fruit juice everyday.

For those who’ve been standing with me in prayer, thank you, and I give thanks to God for His assurance and providence (definitely better than insurance), for sending this group of specialists (from which country I honestly don’t know), and for sending financial help.

To my friends out there, thanks for your support and prayer. Because of my dad's condition, i might not have time to update my blog that often (not that there are a lot of people who actually reads my blog, here's to the few who does, i appreciate it), so as and when i'm free i'll drop by and leave a word or two.

Despite going through trying times, I thank God for those who are prepared to stand by me and my family. And I refuse to use these circumstances as an excuse to take the people, my job and responsibilities that God has placed under my care for granted. I refuse to mistreat people, not that i'm always super nice, or affect the people around me.

Stage III cancer, is it a scary thing?

Just got the results from the doctor, my dad has rectum cancer, and it has spread to the liver. Because of the condition of his heart, the doctors can't do anything until after another scan to figure out how to fix his heart. Then after that he will have to go through chemotherapy to shrink the growth before undergoing an operation to remove it. Sounds like just a few steps eh? But i assure you, it'll be a long journey for my dad and my whole family.

There are so many things to sort out, treatment, time and also financially, how are we going to cope with this. Of course the most important thing is getting the best treatment for my dad. Headache headache and headache, sometimes i really wish i have siblings to discuss this with, at least to work it out together, but thank God for my cousins, aunts and uncles, which i know will not hesitate to help if we need it. Just pray that through this, my dad will draw closer to God, to be fired up for him, just like when he first accepted Him.

Am I worried? Yes of course I am. Am I ok? There are so many things that are going through my mind right now, including Manchester United vs Blackburn this Sunday and also tomorrow's life group, so yeah, I guess I'm ok. My dad's ok, despite the news. Just hope that people won't call me up and ask me how am I, how did my dad got cancer and what not...coz what we need now, are not questions, but support, support through prayer, encouragement and other means.

What to do with your Condemned hard drive?

Ok, so your HDD crashed beyond repair, and all your data cannot be salvage by any means. You criy, you mourn for your precious pictures and MP3s , and not to mention few months work of your final project (serve u right for not backing up!). After all the rituals, ceremony and funeral servoce...what should you do with the freakin harddisk? Use it as an over-priced paper weight? Frame it and hang it on the wall as a reminder so you won't be lazy and start backing up your files? Maybe...or you can check the manufacturing date on the hard drive, coz most manufacturers offer a 3-year warranty (at least 2) for their drives. Wait, what if i've already thrown the darn receipt? It doesn't matter, as long as the date on the drive is still within the warranty period they'll still take it back, (well, if you know who to look for), for a small fee they'll replace the drive for you.

This is what happened to my dear friend nic, used an el-cheapo external casing and fried his hard drive. Lost the receipt, can't even remember which stall he bought from. "The one in the PC fair la!" says Nic....yeah, pandai pun. But manage to get it replaced for him :)

Free...Free...Freecycle!!

Hi all, just to start off the weekend, I have a few mobile stereo headsets to give away, it's new and most importantly, it's free. No strings attached! Well that's part of our motto in FreecycleKL.

Ok back to the free headsets, i have a few leftover sets in my company (has been there for ages, nobody wants to buy it, it's not much of a stylish item you see) for Nokia and Sony Ericsson. So if you want one, and don't mind the weird looks of it, drop me a comment, or better still, go to Freecycle KL and join the group.

If you've not heard about the Freecycle movement yet, it all started in Tucson Texas by a guy name Deron Beal. Determined to keep usable (old or new) items out of the dump, he created Freecycle Network for people to post their unwanted stuffs there so others who could find use of it can arrange for the item to be transferred. On one hand, people can free up space in their house and on the other hand, the items get to be used again instead of piling up in the dumpster. There's no catch and no money should be involved, it's all out of good will. Today, Freecycle has grown into an international network with a huge following (don't worry, it's not a cult), if you google Freecycle, you'll get what i mean.

I've been running the Freecycle KL Network for quite a few years now, and it's been great, so those of you from KL *nudge nudge*, join us la....it's free! (For those from other parts of Malaysia just look it up, there's an active group in PJ as well)

Affected Dairy Products

Since our local authorities say that all dairy products sold in Malaysia are sourced from countries other than china (that's what they claim, maybe 挂羊头;卖狗肉, i don't know) I guess we have no choice but to trust (I know it's hard) what they say. On the other hand, there's the AVA of Singapore which came up with a list of banned products, we could use it as a reference. Here's a list of affected products published by AVA (some of the products might not be sold here, but hey, who knows; SG is just down under separated by a tiny lil bridge):

It saddens me to even think the fact that someone who speaks boldly and stands for what is right, not for himself, but for the good of his fellow citizens, can be thrust into a situation like this. It's not the first time he's being detain under the ISA, it's not the first time he's being persecuted for telling the truth; but one thing's for sure, it won't be the last time he stands up for justice. For that, I salute you my dear RPK.

Man he really has got the guts, to stand up against the Goliath* of our day, I mean, he could've been easily crushed and clobbered (not that they are not trying to do that now), but I believe the power of the truth will always be with the just. And the rakyat whose eyes are bright and minds are clear will stand right by him. And our prayers will continue to follow him wherever he goes (Kamunting, at the moment).

*read: big, dumb and slow...ok, and occassional sakai-ness

As our modern day David strives againts the giants of unjust and corruption, he has opened a path for us, so lets not be afraid to speak up and stand for what we believe in, a better Malaysia.

The violent anti-Christian pogrom (organised campaign of persecution or extermination) that flared up on 23 August in Kandhamal district in the north-east Indian state of Orissa has spread to nine districts, indicating a high level of VHP (Hindu World Council) orchestration. More than 50 Christians have been killed and multitudes have been raped, bashed, burned and slashed. Some 50,000 Christians are displaced. Even the relief camps are being attacked but, praise God, two attempts to poison their water supplies have been thwarted. Furthermore, anti-Christian violence is now erupting in other states. Churches have been torched in Madhya Pradesh and Karnataka whilst nuns from Mother Teresa's Missionaries of Charity were violently assaulted in Chhattisgarh. The central government appears paralysed. Please pray for God's intervention.

Park was fouled twice inside the penalty box, first he was being stepped on, the second time, he was lunged at...both times right in front of the linesmen, and what did he do? Buat tak tau aje!! (Sounds like some off the people here, must've came to Malaysia for a course from the masters of close-one-eye) And the referee? He must have sensed a big decision coming, and slipped away, no where to be seen, just like a twirp. Gundus!!

Prayer Meeting

Just came back from prayer meeting munching on my french fries and Filet-o-Fish (how i wish it's filet mignon instead).

Was holding and blowing the shofar throughout the meeting (well...with breaks in between)...almost ran out of breath, and mind you, it isn't light either. Just in case you've not seen a shofar before, here's how it loooks like.

Blow Wind Blow

On Sunday, mother nature decided to have a game of "Blow-wind-blow" with the trees and signboards in Ampang. Trees were literally up-rooted, signboards ripped off, even people were swept off their feet. Ok, that was Sunday, why am i still talking about it? Thanks to the "tremendous" speed in which our town council acts, i can still see trees laying sideways everywhere on my way to work today...

Ok, my title has nothing to do with what i'm going to blog...just felt like saying it, so? Bite me!

Don't be decieved by my introduction...actually i'm just a warm, friendly, cuddly old uncle wanting to share my lifelong experience with all of you blog reading, computer hogging kids out there. :)
